The plant variety known as Cannabis is a genus of the Cannabacceae family (this includes hops and 170 other species groups). While the true number of varieties is unknown, the three main types of cannabis that are recongized Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis.
Why is this important in to know? Because regardless of the name, the benefits and uses of the plant does not change. In the same way that different breeds of animals and other industrial crops ex-hist under multiple brand names and aliases but are the same or produce the same products.
Hemp is cannabis, but generally of a low THC variety depending on jurisdiction. The United States considers any variety under 0.3% THC industrial hemp while in European Union and South Africa industrial hemp is any variety under 0.2% THC. This confusion and fluctuation in legislation and understanding has led to the classifications of hemp as a drug as well as a disparity between local, federal, and international laws and comprehension, hindering global commercialization and trade of hemp and its derivative products.
